founded in 1666. The old name is Verhneudinsk. The
town was renamed in 1934. Now it is a modern town. It stands on the rivers: the Selenga and the Uda. There are three districts in Ulan-Ude. They are Sovetski, Zheleznodorozhni and Oktyabrski. Sovetski district is a business and cultural centre of the town. Zheleznodorozhni is a worker’s district, because there are many factories here. Oktyabrski is a residential part of Ulan-Ude.Ulan-Ude has many places of interest. Soviet Square is one of the finest open places. It is the oldest centre of the town with its Opera and Ballet House, the movie theatre Progress and hotel Baikal. We also can see beautiful monuments, parks, museums, cinemas, streets. The main street is Lenin Street. It is interesting for its sightseeings. It is the favourite street for shopping and rest.
