History

In 1652, Ivan Pokhabov built a zimovye (winter quarters) near the
site of Irkutsk for gold trading and for the collection of fur taxes from the Buryats. In 1661, Yakov Pokhabov built an ostrog nearby. The ostrog gained official town rights from the government in 1686.

In 1821, Irkutsk became the seat of the Governor-General of East Siberia. (резиденцией генерал-губернатора Восточной Сибири.)

Gradually, Irkutsk became the major center
of intellectual and social life…

Modern life

Mostly, people living in high-rise buildings, but
some live in the cottages. In the city center you
can see a lot of old private houses. Many of
them are architectural monuments of the city.

Most people walk in the park Kirov and on the
waterfront. These places are always held
different celebrations, such as day of the city.
Young people often visits night clubs,
bars and cafes.
